Manchester, UK

WElink this week hosted an important fringe event at the Conservative Party Conference – entitled ‘Innovative, Sustainable, Affordable modular solutions for the UK housing shortage’. The standing-room only event, chaired by Carol Lewis – Deputy Editor of Property and Personal Finance of The Times, had some notable speakers including Alok Sharma MP (Housing Minister), David Orr (Chief Executive of the National Housing Federation), Lord Porter (Chair of the Local Government Association), and WElink’s UK Operations Director Ray Noble.

The session was a lively affair with a number of local councillors and sector representatives airing their views on the challenges and opportunities for the housing sector in the UK. Land and finance were seen as the largest barriers for new housing delivery, and a number of views supported the push for local government to be allowed to borrow on their existing housing assets to fund new homes.

It was also widely acknowledge that innovative design and the incorporation of renewable energy and smart systems was to be encouraged and in many cases, required for all new social and affordable developments.

Overall, the session concluded that low carbon modular solutions would and should play a significant role in meeting the UK Government’s housing target.
